Hewlett Packard Enterprise Releases iLO Amplifier Pack With Server System Restore

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has released an update to its iLO Amplifier Pack, making Server System Restore available to customers who have already purchased or downloaded the iLO Amplifier Pack. Server System Restore is a feature that enables the automatic restoration of server operating environments, through the iLO Advanced Premium Security Edition license, following cyber-attacks or other malware attacks. HPE announced the immediate availability of Server System Restore for existing customers by downloading here.

Why does this matter?

Here’s the situation: you are a Chief Information Officer or Chief Information Security Officer and get “the call.” Infrastructure has been compromised, data has been encrypted. Your business has come to a standstill. After speaking with your team for 15 minutes, you realize your two choices will be to pay a healthy ransom or cobble together a system and data recovery plan that was never updated to account for today’s world. Five days and $50,000 in cryptocurrency later, your organization is back up and running and you just have to trust that the hackers who attacked your infrastructure were noble enough to remove all malware and destroy any copies of your data they may have had.

Sound pretty farfetched? It’s not. Ransomware attacks have increased 15-fold in the last two years. Next year it’s predicted that a company will be infected by ransomware every 14 seconds. And the cost? By 2021, ransomware will cost the global economy $6 trillion. On that note, I recently documented the case of how Uber was breached, exploited and held for ransom—if you need real world example of these perils, read more here.

So you find your servers locked down and data encrypted – what do you do? Many IT organizations have disaster recovery (DR) plans in place that document recovery from a server outage. Unfortunately, many of the plans IT organizations rely on are outdated and the methods and technologies used do not account for recovering from ransomware. During the last wave of Notpetya ransomware attacks, a large enterprise was severely exploited. Its recovery from this attack consisted of restoring over 4,000 servers, 45,000 PCs and 2,500 applications. Amazingly, it fully recovered in 10 days—at the small cost of $200 million.

How’s your cybersecurity strategy these days?

All of these “hackopalypse” statistics and stories are cited and rehashed as reminders to take those outdated cybersecurity strategies and update them, accounting for newer technologies that can help in both risk mitigation and incident response.

In past articles by my firm’s Principal Analyst Patrick Moorhead and myself, we have explored new silicon-rooted security[/entity] features in servers from Hewlett Packard Enterprise that can protect against attacks and, in the event of breach, quickly detect the most insidious malware rooted in firmware. HPE’s silicon root of trust is perhaps the most comprehensive server security available for IT organizations. I believe HPE’s implementation of silicon root of trust is the gold standard in protecting IT server infrastructure from these attacks that are increasingly difficult to detect. By comparing a server’s firmware against an immutable fingerprint, the most insidious of rootkit and firmware attacks can be detected far more quickly than what is experienced in IT organizations. This quick detection can minimize the damage of ransomware attacks.

However, detection is only one half of the equation. Once detected, how does an organization ensure servers are clean and restored appropriately? That is, how do you ensure OS images, applications, and data are cleanly installed and loaded? In the case of the large enterprise I mentioned earlier, it was a herculean effort of an IT team and technology partners to achieve this in less than half time of the industry average of 23 days. But can your organization afford 10 days of downtime and a loss of at least $200 million?

HPE Server System Restore delivers “single click recovery”

In today’s world of digital everything, time to recovery can be the difference between staying ahead of the competition and falling far behind. Recovery time objective (RTO) and maximum tolerable downtime (MTD) are more than just acronyms that make a disaster recovery plan look legitimate. With this in mind, IT organizations would be well served to give a hard look at tools like Server System Restore from HPE. Server System Restore is a new capability in HPE’s iLO Amplifier Pack that can automatically restore up to 10,000 servers with a single click – from silicon to operating systems to applications to data.

I’m a fan of HPE’s Server System Restore for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, it is tightly integrated to HPE’s silicon root of trust. What this means is very strong protection complemented by quick recovery on the back end. Second, Server System Restore makes recovery simple, secure, and scalable. Whether an organization has one hundred, one thousand, or ten thousand servers, IT administrators can configure Server System Restore to automatically:

  • Remove corrupt firmware
  • Reinstall validated firmware (and apply proper settings)
  • Securely restore operating systems
  • Restore applications
  • Restore data

Single click. Complete restoration.

Let’s reconsider the Petya attack referenced earlier. 10 days to restore 4,000 servers. If Server System Restore was used in response to this attack, this enterprise could have recovered in a matter of hours and saved hundreds of millions of dollars.

It’s not just large enterprises that can benefit from HPE’s Gen10 ProLiant servers and Server System Restore. In fact, I believe small to mid-sized enterprises are more at risk than organizations with tens of thousands of servers. These smaller organizations tend to have less resources available and less time to recover before the financial toll becomes too big.

Final thoughts

“Point” product releases don’t usually capture my attention, but this is different. I believe Server System Restore completes the HPE server security strategy and puts the company in a security leadership position. I don’t know of any other players in the server space that offer such a tightly integrated, end-to-end solution. For those organizations that have deployed HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers, download this update as soon as possible. For those who have not deployed HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers? Reconsider your decision.

The AR5 has 1 removable sealed tray for CPU and SSD drive. The latest mission computer from Core Systems includes the latest Intel® Chipset technology with 1.91GHz max clock speed and also includes 38999 MIL-Circular connectors for I/O and power.

The AR5 is tested to meet MIL-STD-810G & DO-160G Shock, Vibration, Thermal, Altitude, and Humidity. The two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports support keyboard, mouse, and other devices. Also included is a RS-232 port, three 8254 timer/counters, and I2C support. There are eight Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports with remote boot support and PoE functionality. Rugged AR5D Mission Computer

The AR5D is a dual computer in one chassis that has two independent removable sealed trays for CPU/hard drives. It has two independent red/black systems and also includes 38999 MIL-Circular connectors for I/O and power.

Each of the independent computers have two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0 ports support keyboard, mouse, and other devices. Also included is a RS-232 port, three 8254 timer/counters, and I2C support. There are 8 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports on each computer with remote boot support and PoE support. Each system has integrated Intel HD Graphics with DisplayPort output (DP++).

The addition of these two mission computers expands the already comprehensive line of tactical AR systems. HPE Gen10 Takes Rugged Servers to the Next Level

With an increase in security risks affecting companies big and small, the release of HPE Gen10 couldn’t have come at a more critical time. Small but Strong, Rugged Mission Computers Add Versatility to the Military

As technology grows it also seems to shrink at the same time. Electrical devices of all kinds have become more and more compact over the past decade, so much so that we have access to most of the world’s information right in our pocket. However, this trend goes far beyond iPhones and Snapchat glasses.

The military has found that small rugged mission computers provide the versatility and convenience they need out on the battlefield. These mission computers (also referred to as tactical computers) are SWaP-optimized, high-powered, ruggedized devices that can be configured to fit any operating environment.
Rugged mission computers can easily be modified to fit plenty of tactical needs. Whether on a tank, ship, or aircraft, these computers have become a necessity for military assignments. These systems reduce SWaP on these modes of transportation, allowing missions to expand tactically. How Salt, Sand, Dust and Fog Can Drastically Affect Military Computers

It’s difficult to consider salt, sand, dust, and fog as an enemy on the battlefield that can destroy your resources, but it happens more often than you think. These small particles can easily get inside computers, servers, and displays, ruining the inner workings of these devices and corroding the rugged shell around it. Because of this, all electrical devices that may encounter these environments must go under stringent testing to ensure that these particles do not clog openings/filters, cause cracking of the protective coating, or cause any electrical failures.

MIL-STD-810 Testing

In order to combat these pesky fragments of nature, the military introduced a standard of “environmental engineering considerations and laboratory tests” labeled MIL-STD-810. MIL-STD-810 tests the extremes that a system will experience throughout its service life. Test methods 509.5 and 510.5 covers salt, fog, blowing sand, and dust. These tests are approved for use by all departments within the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and are also used for commercial and industrial units.

Testing for Salt and Fog

Fog and salt are tested under method 509.5 and focuses on accelerated corrosion and electrical problems. Salt and fog testing are most common for Naval use or any sections of the military that find themselves in coastal areas where salt spray and fog is unavoidable. The main objective of these tests is to see how protective the coating on a server, LCD or mission computer is under intense salt and fog conditions. If the outer shell is compromised, the inner electrical workings are then put under stress and will be evaluated as to whether or not there are failures.

The machines used for the testing are required to produce an environment with 5% salt/fog and is circulated with the system inside. Testing usually lasts two full days with a two-day drying period to follow. Cycling by testing and drying for 24 hours at a time has also proven to be effective as the changes tend to put more stress on the system and simulate more of a real environment. Following the tests, the unit is inspected by experts for corrosion effects, physical deformities, and any electrical problems.

Testing for Sand and Dust

Sand and dust are tested under method 510.5 and looks for any abrasions, penetration, clogging, temperature changes, etc. Blowing sand and dust testing is most common for sections of the military that are land-based, especially in deserts and remote areas. Under method 510.5, dust is defined as anything less than 150um and sand is defined as anything in the range of 150um-850um. During the testing process, the machines look to expose the system to any vent clogging, scratches, electrical problems and more.

Temperatures need to be kept at the systems highest operating temperature throughout the testing period to fully understand how they would operate in a desert-type region. The machines used for testing are built to mimic desert winds as much as possible by keeping the humidity below 30% and the air velocity at 300-1750 ft. Surprisingly there are different types of sand and dust to test based on regions in which the unit will be used. Testing takes approximately 12 hours and cycles through different temperature extremes. During these cycles, systems are rotated every 90 minutes to expose all sides to blowing sand and dust.


Whether a system will be used on land or at sea, testing for salt, fog, sand, and dust is imperative to creating a truly rugged server, portable computer, or LCD display. A small speck of sand can infiltrate a system and compromise a mission, so testing methods 509.5 and 510.5 of MIL-STD-810 should not be overlooked.

What the Military Looks for in Rugged LCD Displays

With the increased use of technology out in the field, the military has put an emphasis on rugged LCD displays. While on missions in harsh environments, military LCDs need to be built to withstand much more rigorous situations than your average desktop monitor. The factors considered when purchasing a display for the average user is readability, size, and price. For those of whom who need to read an LCD screen on a ship in the middle of the ocean in 100-degree weather, the needs for an LCD display dramatically changes.

Readability in the Sun

One of the most common requests in building a rugged LCD screen is sunlight (daylight) readability. Most of us have had some difficulty while reading our smartphone on a bright day, but adding some shade with a free hand is a serviceable solution. However, if you’re on a critical mission with lives on the line, this may not be an option. In order to ensure readability at all times in the day, an LCD should be tested under all lighting conditions. Direct sunlight, reflections, and artificial lighting can affect a display so much so that it becomes unreadable. Dusk and darkness can be a difficult time to view LCD screens as well so dimming capabilities need to be installed. Since these needs vary so much through the day and into the night, personnel need an easy-to-use on-screen display (OSD) to quickly adjust settings to their needs.

During most missions that involve the Army, Air Force, Navy or other branches of the military, screens are not treated with a whole lot of care. The environment they’re in guarantees that they’ll be unstable, constantly adjusted, and moved from site to site. Because of this, all screens should meet required military standards and be prepared to take a beating.

Size and Weight

The military can have a variety of different needs for an LCD during a single mission. This means it needs to be adaptable to as many situations as necessary. Size and weight play a major role as screens may need to be moved to different areas or placed on unorthodox surfaces. Users need to be able to move displays around easily and quickly. A bulky, heavy display will slow down missions and could result in a critical loss in time.

Resistance to High/Low Temperatures

Whether it’s the desert or the mountains, a screen cannot fail due to temperature. To ensure that this doesn’t happen, LCD displays need to meet military standards and be able to operate at temperatures ranging from at least 5°F to 130°F (-15°C to +55°C). Storage temperature is just as important because displays need to be ready to be deployed at all times. Storage temperature of rugged LCD displays should be able to withstand temperatures ranging from -67°F to 185°F (-55°C to +85°C).

Altitude Testing

The large altitude chamber simulation handles up to 100,000 feet and includes temperature, rapid decompression and even negative altitude for all 810 military call outs. The altitude chamber is used for products that are employed for air-borne or aerospace applications.

Temperature Testing

For common temperature and humidity testing, Core Systems has six chambers that handle thermal cycling and a wide range of extremes to achieve fatigue and identify latent defects over a period of time. Temperature change is among the most common stress factors that a server, LCD, mission computer or portable computer endures in its service life.

EMI Testing

For customers with MIL-STD-461 EMI concerns, Core Systems can test and handle all CE102, RE102 RS103, and RS103 testing. Spectrum analyzers, EMI scanning, and a fully anechoic chamber are all owned and operated at the Core Systems facility to ensure EMI concerns are handles and proven in a detailed graph showing high and low points.

Shock and Vibration Testing

With dynamic factors such as displacement, velocity, acceleration, and force, vibration from electrodynamic shakers, Core Systems can accurately simulate a wide range of conditions that can help improve product quality and reliability. The Core Systems shock and vibration testing lab features a VR9500 Vibration Controller, which efficiently runs vibration tests at low and high sample rates with up to 26,000 lines of resolution for random testing is an industry maximum and at your deposal for any servers, displays or tactical systems.

Salt/Fog Testing

The Core Systems Salt and Fog Chamber provides a controlled accelerated corrosive environment for evaluating the relative corrosion resistance of the coating, substrate, or part itself. Parts or panels are placed inside a chamber and exposed continually for a specified period and then evaluated for resistance to corrosion. Salt and fog is a common problem as it is present from air to land to seas.

Rugged MPM701

The rugged MPM701 is a rugged 7″ widescreen LCD with a full on screen display (OSD) and 8-button USB keypad on the front bezel. The screen is built with anti-reflective glass and has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080. The rugged MPM701 is shock mounted and has been tested to meet DO-160E standards.

Rugged R4201 Server

The Raptor-R4201 is full featured medium depth (20″) 4U industrial computer. The system includes 4 available PCIe slots, dual SATA hard drives and a DVDRW all powered by a multi-core Intel i3 CPU.

The RAPTOR-R4201 ships with either a Windows or Linux OS and can be configured for fault tolerance with mirrored RAID drives and the addition of a dual redundant hot-swap power supply (AC or DC).

Rugged Cisco Mobile Router/Switch

The MTN5915 is a repackaged, rugged Cisco 5915 Embedded Services Router (ESR) card. The ruggedized MTN5915 is a perfect solution for harsh environments. The fully sealed design supports extended temperature operation as well as harsh shock, vibration, and altitude requirements. It provides five 10/100 Ethernet ports (2X WAN uplinks, 3X LAN ports) along with standard or custom connections. Internal wide range DC power and power conditioning are also accommodated.


It is built to survive shock and vibrations as it is milled from solid aircraft aluminum to provide unmatched structural rigidity. The aluminum chassis is ultra-rugged and fully conduction-cooled. It also includes an integrated GigE Ethernet switch and provides secure yet scalable data for a variety of applications.

All outer MIL-Spec circular connectors are sealed and water tight. The entire MTN5915 chassis which is also protected from all the elements. The standard temperature range is -15 degrees Celsius to +55 degrees Celsius. Extended temperature ranges from -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius making this router tough in nearly all environments.

Mr. Ramirez comes to Core Systems with 30 years of industry testing experience in Military and Commercial Testing experience. Most of his 30 years of experience were with Hewlett Packard Enterprise running test lab procedures for mechanical and environmental testing. Jose will lead the way for all of Core Systems in-house testing such as, MIL-STD 810, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-901D and MIL-STD-167 to qualify Core Systems Rugged Servers and Displays under harsh, stressful environmental conditions and can help to improve product quality and reliability.

Core Systems has engineered and built a short depth, all-in-one system with a removable drive and room for a PCI-e card all within a 1U form factor. This is a first in the industry, as no company has successfully accomplished this feat.

Core Systems Releases the MTN5915 Ruggedized Cisco Router

Core Systems Incorporated, a leading global provider of rugged computer solutions, announced a ruggedized version of Cisco switches and routers. The MTN5915 MIL-SPEC Cisco 5915 IOS-managed router, qualified to meet MIL-STD-810, MIL-S-901D, MIL-STD-167, and MIL-STD-461.

The MTN5915; a repackaged, rugged Cisco 5915 Embedded Services Router (ESR) card is a perfect solution for harsh environments including shelter, tactical, vehicle, military, and offshore drilling. The fully sealed design supports extended temperature operation from -40ºC to +80ºC and also meets harsh shock, vibration, and altitude requirements. Core Systems Passes MIL-S-901D Barge Testing

Core Systems Incorporated, a leading global provider of rugged computer solutions, announced it has passed MIL-S-901D barge testing at the Rustburg Division of National Technical Systems (NTS).

Multiple configurations of the Core Systems’ rackmount servers and displays were loaded for High Impact Heavyweight 901D shock testing for CVN Communications Equipment. The objective was to verify the EUT would operate prior to, during, and after a near-miss explosion. Core Systems was successful in the test series, Grade A, Class 1, Unrestricted Orientation Vertical Axis Specified, and approved for the following platforms: CVN, CG, DDG, FFG, LCC, LCS, LHA, LPD, LSD, and MCM.

The RCAT-4948E is a hardened 2U 4948E Ethernet Switch qualified to meet MIL-STD-810, MIL-S-901D, MIL-STD-167, and MIL-STD-461. This rugged COTS RCAT-4948E ethernet switch extends to military applications with enhancements that support the deployment of data and multimedia services that require thermal, shock, vibration, altitude, and humidity conditions not offered by the standard commercial Cisco version. Core Systems Releases New 2U Rackmount Dual 19″ LCD Display MLD1920-RDS

Core Systems, the industry leader of rugged rackmount computers and displays, announced today their release of the brand new 2U rackmount dual 19” LCD display, the MLD1920-RDS. The new 2U dual screen rackmount LCD features side-by-side 19” LCDs in an ultra short depth of 20”. The all-aluminum construction provides for a sturdy lightweight chassis. Each 19” LCD screen offers a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 pixels, a color depth of 16.7 million colors, and a contrast ratio of 500:1. The MLD1920-RDS features an integrated kill switch for all electronics, dual thumb screw locks, and integrated heavy duty friction slide rails.

The MLD1920-RDS brings new and innovative updates in construction. The 2U dual display features dual rear locks on each display, ensuring the unit remains securely closed during rough transport. Another unique feature of the Core Systems 2U dual screen is the introduction of dual rear pistons located on the rear of the display. These heavy duty rear pistons serve to keep each display in the open position during heavy shock and vibration. Core Systems Supports Our Troops Through Operation Shoebox

Core Systems, industry leader of rackmount computers and rackmount displays, assembled and shipped out Christmas care packages to deployed troops overseas on Friday. After consulting Core friends and family members in the armed forces, Core Systems employees brought in various items that are sure to become favorites of the troops. Every box that was shipped included all-American favorites such as beef jerky, card and dice games, candy and snacks, books and magazines, and plenty of gum.

This is the first year Core Systems has sent care packages to the troops, President of Core Systems Chris Schaffner said, “Everyone thought hard about what they’d like to receive if they were deployed overseas. We were all excited to send a small token of our thanks during this holiday season. All of us intend to make this an annual event here at Core.”

Core Systems shipped the packages through the organization Operation Shoebox. Founded in 2003 as a way to support deployed servicemen overseas, Operation Shoebox’s goal was to raise troop morale and to remind them that they are cared for and appreciated. Operation Shoebox consistently organizes and ships care packages to troops that are deployed overseas throughout the year.

Core Systems Rugged Rackmount Computers Pass MIL-S-901D High Impact Shock Tests

The M-Raptor Series of rugged rackmount computers from Core Systems has successfully passed shock tests for MIL-S-901D, Grade A (mission critical) Class I (without the use of resilient mountings), as confirmed by an independent accredited testing facility. MIL-S-901D is a military specification for high impact shock on shipboard (Navy) systems, with Grade A referring specifically to items which are essential to the safety and continued combat capability of the ship, and Class I referring to equipment that is directly mounted to the bulkhead of the ship without the use of a shock isolated mounting system. Grade A and Class I are both the highest levels of testing standards in their respective categories.

Core Systems’ rugged computers were tested in the lightweight category. This requires that the Core Systems rugged computers be placed on an anvil that is struck by a 400 pound hammer at hammer heights of 1, 3, and 5 feet respectively. The hammer test is carried out at each height on three different axis points for a total of 9 hammer blows.
